LFC FoundationFootball Unites Communities at LFC Academy for Black History Month
The LFC Foundation’s Inclusion team hosted a special Refugee & Asylum Seeker Black History Month Tournament at the LFC Academy, bringing together communities through the power of football.
The 8-a-side tournament welcomed teams from across the region, including representatives from the LFC Foundation, Everton in the Community, Hope United, Wirral Change, and the Warrington Asylum Seeker & Refugee Support Group. The event was a celebration of Black history and culture, using football as a unifying force to promote inclusion, understanding, and community cohesion.
Funded through Islamic Relief, the tournament forms part of the Foundation’s wider Refugee & Asylum Seeker Programme, which aims to support individuals through sport, education, and social integration. The programme provides regular football sessions designed to reduce social isolation, build friendships, and improve physical and mental wellbeing which directly links with the LFC Foundation's mission to tackle social inequalities in our communities.
This season, the programme is set to engage over 700 participants, with a continued focus on providing holistic support. Through the Refugee & Asylum Seeker Advisory Board—a collaborative effort with Bedspace, Active8, Liverpool City Council, and Asylum Link—the Foundation is also helping individuals access accommodation, employment opportunities, and further education.
Mathew Murphy, LFC Foundation’s Sports & Inclusion Programmes Manager said: “It was fantastic to see teams from across Liverpool City Region come together and take part in this tournament at the LFC Academy.
“Football has the power to break down barriers and bring people together and this tournament was a fantastic example of how sport can be used to celebrate the diversity in our communities.”
