Liverpool Football Club could secure 20th league title this week
It’s an absolutely massive week for everyone associated with Liverpool FC, who will be crowned Premier League champions on Sunday if they beat Tottenham Hotspur FC at Anfield.
Liverpool Football Club are just three points away from securing their 20th league title.
Three points away. Premier League title. Drink it in, LFC fans.
Arne Slot’s remarkable first season in charge at Anfield looks destined to finish with the biggest prize of all, and the Reds’ fans know that next Sunday will be so, so special if the Dutchman can oversee a win over Tottenham Hotspur FC in front of the Liverpool FC faithful.
While the Reds could, in fact, seal the title were Crystal Palace FC to beat Arsenal FC on Wednesday night, Slot is adamant that his side will keep the same focus on their own performance that has made this such a season to remember.
“Of course there is a lot of noise and everybody is very excited, but at our training ground we are just focused on the training sessions we do and trying to prepare in the best possible way for Tottenham, which is a team where all the injuries are coming back and are a team that deserves our full attention,” said the LFC head coach.
“The boys also have one or two days off during this week because we’ve planned that already a long time ago and hopefully they will enjoy some time with their loved ones and be fully focused when we are back together to work towards Tottenham.”
Slot was speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Leicester City FC at the King Power Stadium, with Trent Alexander-Arnold coming on as a substitute to score his first ever left-footed goal for his boyhood club.
The 26-year-old’s contract situation remains up in the air but his boss is in no doubt about the right-back’s commitment to the only club he has ever played for.
“The headline should be today the goal he scored and not about his contract,” added Slot.
“But what I can say is it would be ridiculous if someone argues his commitment for this club because the work-rate he put in to be back today and make such an important goal, and all the work he has done for this club in all these years he is here, no-one – in my opinion – can argue his commitment to this club. But let the headlines be [about] his great goal and not his contract situation.”
Virgil van Dijk, meanwhile, knows how close he and his teammates are to celebrating a momentous title victory.
However, the club’s skipper is taking nothing for granted.
“It’s a great feeling to be in this position, something we don’t take for granted,” our No.4 said after the victory at King Power Stadium, van Dijk’s first game since joining Mohamed Salah in extending his deal on Merseyside.
“It’s been, in my opinion, an outstanding season. A lot of good moments. A lot of good moments actually, a lot of wins and good performances.
“Now we have the chance to finish it off on the weekend against a very good Tottenham Hotspur, in my opinion. We played three times already against them this season and every game was very intense.
“We’ve got a week to prepare. If anything happens on Wednesday then happy days, if not then we have to finish it off and we have to be at our best to do that. That’ll be our main focus.
“To be in this position now, it’s a good position but we’re not there yet. We all have to realise that and we will. We’ll make sure of that. It’s a good week of preparation and then we have to be ready.”
News of van Dijk’s new deal came as music to the ears of anyone associated with the club, not least one of the Dutchman’s young compatriots.
Ryan Gravenberch said: "In my opinion, he's still playing but he is a Liverpool legend and he is really important for us. I'm really happy with him."
Given his importance to the side and the maturity he has shown in front of the Reds’ defence this season, it can come as a surprise to learn that Gravenberch is still just 22-years-old.
The midfielder has started every single Premier League game this season, and has no intention of slowing down now.
"Still going strong!" the former Ajax and Bayern Munich star added.
"To be honest, it's really tough as well.
"Last season I didn't play a lot and now I play almost every game. It's tough but I still keep going.
"In the beginning of the season I had to adapt to the new role, to the new position. I didn't play a lot there but now I know what I have to do. The manager fully trusted me there, so I'm really happy with that."
