Arne Slot: Welcome to Liverpool Football Club

A new era beckons at Liverpool Football Club, as the club says goodbye to the legendary Jürgen Klopp and welcomes Arne Slot as its new head coach.

Arne Slot has been named as the new head coach of Liverpool Football Club, and will take up the position at the start of June.

The news was confirmed on Monday, less than 24 hours after Jürgen Klopp waved goodbye to an emotional Anfield crowd after leading the Reds to a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

Klopp will go down as one of the greatest managers in the long history of the Merseyside club, winning the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and, of course, the Premier League title in 2019-20.

Slot joins LFC after three highly successful seasons in charge of Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won the league title in 2023 and the KNVB Cup in April this year.

The 45-year-old’s first pre-season in charge of Liverpool FC will begin in July.

Sunday, however, was a time to look back at Klopp’s highly successful time at the helm of the most successful club in the history of English football.

After watching his side beat Gary O’Neil’s Wolves thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah - the young defender’s second in a week - Klopp was treated to the ultimate farewell before he takes a break from professional football.

Among those to pay tribute was Harvey Elliott, who played such a pivotal role in Klopp’s last great Reds side despite only recently turning 21.

"We're in the best possible position because of him and his coaching staff," the young playmaker told LiverpoolFC.com. "What he's taught us, how to become real players and real men as well. I think his style of play is iconic and I think we'll be taking a lot of things that we've learnt from the boss and be taking it into the next chapter.

"We're all very excited for it. It's a new chapter, it's a new challenge for everyone and it's a fresh start. Us as players, we need to enjoy it, we need to be excited for it as well.

"We need to show the new gaffer the ways of Liverpool, but Jürgen and his coaching have definitely left something here. It's all credit to himself and the coaching staff.

"We just need to enjoy it and in the summertime we can do the thinking and get ready for the next season."

Andy Robertson echoed Elliott’s sentiments, insisting Klopp’s personality and warmth will be missed just as much as his managerial skills.

“I came as a relatively young person, 23 I think I was, with no kids. That’s obviously changed, off the pitch, and he’s always been one of the first ones there for me,” Robertson said after the Wolves game.

“In terms of difficult moments, good moments I’ve had off the pitch, he’s always been one of the first to pick up the phone or give us a text to congratulate or to see if I’m OK.

“That’s what people maybe don’t see. As a manager you can speak all day about him, and everybody could, but as a person he’s done a lot for all of us and that’s where he will always hold a special place in our hearts for that.

“Now we have to move on, but not until we give him a send-off. He’s a special person for this club and he deserves every moment he gets.”

Praise for Klopp’s impact on LFC was not reserved just to his current players.

Steven Gerrard - who left the club just months before Klopp took over in October 2015 and would go on to manage the U18s as part of the German’s backroom team – paid his own tribute to the outgoing boss.

"I will miss Jürgen mostly because he is up there with the best coaches in the world, he improves players and builds winning teams that are brilliant to watch,” Gerrard enthused.

"He has done an incredible job here. It hurts more when someone feels part of the LFC family, he is one of us.

"I wish him well and want to thank him for everything he has achieved but also for being normal, humble, funny and an all-round great person. What a man!"

Finally, four LFC players have been named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are joined by Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, who are both uncapped at senior international level.

The Reds quartet will be involved in the Three Lions’ training squad for pre-tournament friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland four days later.

Head coach Southgate must submit his final 26-man group for the European Championship by midnight on June 7, with England’s opening match versus Serbia taking place in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.
