Jurgen Klopp is looking to make the former Bayern Munich winger their his new signing of the summer.

Shaqiri has a release clause which means he can leave Stoke for around £13.5million after their relegation.

The Reds have opened discussions with the Potters, who are resigned to losing the Switzerland international.

Shaqiri has been considering his options since his involvement in Russia was ended at the last 16 stage by Sweden last week.

The Liverpool ECHO understands that the 26-year-old, who is currently on holiday, favours a move to Anfield and Stoke expect him to complete the switch to Anfield.

Shaqiri has made it clear that he wants to stay in the Premier League and said recently: “You are going to hear soon on my future.

“I was not thinking about this because I was just focused on my national team and wanted to make a good tournament for my team and my nation. It’s pretty normal to be aware of clubs being interested.

“Of course, I would like to play on the biggest stage in football. Everybody knows that.”

Shaqiri joined Stoke from Inter Milan three years ago. He started his career at boyhood club Basel before moving on to Bayern Munich in 2012.
