Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has changed his mind on signing a defender this summer because of the five players currently at his disposal.

Liverpool boss Klopp has been tipped to rival Manchester United for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

The Reds know they need to be tighter at the back if they are to dethrone Manchester City as Premier League champions next term.

And the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce has now revealed that, with Klopp content, Liverpool are unlikely to sign a defender this summer.

“Not that I know of,” he said when asked if Klopp still had a defender on his list of priorities.

“Klopp was delighted with how Van Dijk and Lovren established a partnership in the second half of last season.

“Matip is also close to full fitness after his thigh injury.

“Gomez is on the comeback trail and I’d expect him to get some game time at centre-back in 2018/19.

“Then there’s Klavan, who is about to enter the final year of his deal.”
