Chelsea and Liverpool are interested in a move for former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, according to reports.

Vermaelen made over 150 appearances for the Gunners, but started just seven games in his last season with the club after struggling with injuries.

He moved to Barcelona in the summer of 2014 for £15million, but his injures continued at the Nou Camp.

Since moving to Spain the Belgium international has made just seven league appearances for the Catalan giants.

Despite his lack of game time, Spanish outlet Fichajes claim Chelsea and Liverpool are both interested in bringing the Belgian back to the Premier League.

The reports adds Vermaelen is keen on moving back to England, and Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old.

Chelsea have been on the look out for a new defender after John Terry revealed he will not be offered a new contract with the club.

And Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is planning to strengthen his defence in the summer, with the arrival of Schalke's Joe Matip already confirmed.
