It’s likely to be a quiet transfer deadline day for Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp prepared to battle on until the end of the season with his existing squad.

The Reds boss had hoped to secure an injection of firepower during the winter window but the club’s pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Alex Teixeira has been unsuccessful.

There would have to be a dramatic development in the coming hours for that deal to happen considering the gulf in valuation between Liverpool and the Ukrainian outfit.

The Brazilian, who had publicly expressed his desire to move to Anfield, is currently enjoying some time off in his homeland following the end of a winter training camp in Florida.

Liverpool offered £24.5million with a further £3million in add-ons but were told they would have to pay £38million (50million Euros) to secure his services.

Negotiations then proved problematic with Shakhtar’s asking price fluctuating. At one stage they wanted 60million Euros, then 70million Euros before then claiming they would take 50million Euros.

Liverpool simply weren’t prepared to bid that high for a 26-year-old who has never been capped by his country.

Shakhtar now want Teixeira to stay until the summer as they chase the domestic title and glory in the Europa League.

Reports linking Liverpool with Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev are wide of the mark.

The Reds have no interest in the Russian, who has also been linked with a loan move to Sevilla.

It means that defender Steven Caulker, who was brought in on loan from Queens Park Rangers, is likely to be the only new addition to Klopp’s squad during this window.
