Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk both featured as the Netherlands were edged out 3-2 by Italy in the UEFA Nations League third-place play-off.

The Liverpool pair each played all 90 minutes of Sunday’s tie in Enschede, where first-half strikes from Federico Dimarco and Davide Frattesi put the Italians two goals up.

Steven Bergwijn halved that deficit for the Dutch midway through the second half, evading a tackle and dispatching a clinical finish after Gakpo’s cross into the box was diverted to him.

Federico Chiesa soon restored the two-goal cushion and despite former Reds midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum netting a second for the Netherlands late on, Italy secured bronze at the tournament finals.
