Curtis Jones feels Liverpool's renewed confidence and belief provided the basis to overcome a late scare and secure Sunday's dramatic 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds recorded a fourth Premier League win in succession courtesy of a clinical 95th-minute effort from Diogo Jota to move up to fifth in the table.

The Portugal forward was required to strike the decisive blow in the pulsating contest after Jürgen Klopp’s side had gone three goals ahead inside the opening 15 minutes, only to be pegged back to 3-3 in injury time by the visitors.

Jones reflected to Liverpoolfc.com: “It ended up being a tough game. We were cruising and were 3-0 up but we let them back in, but in this team at the minute the spirit is high and the confidence is up, of course.

“We took the foot off the gas a little bit. We were 3-0 up within 15 [minutes] and myself as well, I was keeping the ball a bit. The direction changed a little bit and we weren’t as direct and were slowing it down a little bit.

“It was early on in the game so if ever you are up like that [winning 3-0] you should always just keep your foot on the gas and try to get a fourth, fifth or even a sixth. We allowed them in and we gave ourselves a hard job, but as I said, job done in the end so happy days.

“A win’s a win and we did it and that’s the important thing.”

It was Jones who set Liverpool on their way when he neatly converted a trademark pinpoint delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold after just three minutes at Anfield.

The effort was the midfielder’s first goal of a 2022-23 season he acknowledges has been tough on a personal level, with injuries restricting him to just 18 appearances so far.

“We always speak about [the quality of] Trent and as soon as the ball was at his feet I made the run and it wasn’t a doubt that he would pick me out,” he added. “I took it well, but fair play to Trent with the ball that he put in. It was a good goal.

“I’ve said before for the team and for me personally this season has been hard. It’s been an up and down time but we are at a point now where we are winning games back to back and the performances have been good as well.

“With how it’s going at the moment, I didn’t have a thought that we weren’t going to come away with a win. We made it hard but job done and another three points.”
