Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been named on the shortlist for the 2020 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The midfielder led the club to a first league title in 30 years as they won the 2019-20 Premier League with a record points tally in Reds history of 99.

That success followed the team’s triumphs in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, each of which Henderson lifted as skipper.

The 30-year-old was also widely praised for his role in professional players’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic and received the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year accolade.

Henderson was the third of six contenders for BBC Sports Personality of the Year to be revealed on Tuesday, following Lewis Hamilton and Stuart Broad. Hollie Doyle, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Tyson Fury were then added to the shortlist.

The winner will be decided by a public vote and announced at the annual live show, which will take place on Sunday December 20.
