Joel Matip will miss Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with Salzburg, Jürgen Klopp has confirmed.

The centre-back sustained ‘a slight knock’ in the win at Sheffield United last weekend and is therefore unavailable for Wednesday’s Group E fixture at Anfield.

Xherdan Shaqiri also remains sidelined with a calf injury.

“Both are not available for tomorrow night. With Shaq, I don’t know 100 per cent but we will see. He will not be ready for tomorrow but I don’t know exactly how it looks in the moment because he is still in the hands of the medical department,” Klopp said on Tuesday.

“With Joel, it is not a big one but it is big enough that he is not available for tomorrow night. We don’t want to have any risks and we don’t have to take any risks and that’s why he will not be involved. I don’t know [if he will be available for Leicester City on Saturday], we will see.”

The clash with Salzburg will also come too soon for Alisson Becker.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “Apart from that [Shaqiri and Matip], everybody should be fine. Alisson is very close but for sure not for tomorrow. I think that’s it pretty much.”
