Jürgen Klopp: The break is not allowed to impact our intensity
Jürgen Klopp is confident Liverpool can maintain the same intensity levels displayed in their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season prior to the international break when they resume action today.
The Reds welcome Newcastle United to Anfield for the lunchtime kick-off, a fortnight on from their last outing – a 3-0 victory at Burnley.
And despite the recess meaning the majority of the squad only reconvened at Melwood in midweek, Klopp sees no reason why his team cannot match the same output delivered in the campaign’s first four top-flight outings, insisting it is 'not allowed' for thier levels to drop this afternoon.
He wrote in his column in the official matchday programme: “Ahead of the break we were in a very good moment. The performances against Arsenal and Burnley were of a high team and individual standard. But the international break does re-set the clock a little and therefore we must all be ready to switch back on.
“Because of international call-ups we haven’t had the majority of the squad together for long to prepare for this game. I know we are not unique and every team is affected. But it does impact.
“What’s important is that we stick to the values that have served us so well. Values of embracing hard work, doing the right things, being relentless, staying together and most importantly ensuring we bring the intensity in everything we do.
“A break from being together might impact a little on preparation and therefore rhythm, although I would argue we have the mentality and character to combat this. But it does not - and must not - be allowed to impact on our intensity of approach. This is the same with it being an early kick-off. We have proved time and time again that factors outside our control won’t affect us if we don’t allow it.
“The period coming between now and the next break for international football will be very busy for players and supporters alike. My players have the most outstanding attitude when it comes to recognising their responsibilities to the team and club during these moments.
“They recognise contribution isn’t just about who are the 11 names on a teamsheet today. It’s about making sure everyone is ready at all times to play their part, whatever that involves. It’s about making sure training remains of the highest quality, whether it be short or long sessions.
“We have set our own benchmarks and we can decide if we want to maintain and even surpass them. The opponents we face will be of the highest quality, but this is always the case at the level we compete at. I have zero doubt in this squad – they know what is required of them each and every day.
“And the same applies to our amazing supporters. It feels like a long time ago we were all together at Anfield for a game, so I’m sure all will arrive here today with their 'game face' on.
“I’ve mentioned about the game at Newcastle last season. A big part of that game was how ferocious their supporters were in backing their team. I’m pretty sure we expect the same in the away section this afternoon.
“So, in the same way, the players need to increase their performance levels to take on this Newcastle, so must we all.”
