Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson both reached unprecedented levels for defenders in terms of creating goals this past season.

Alexander-Arnold's 12 Premier League assists in 2018-19 was the highest amount ever recorded by a defender in a single campaign.

Robertson's tally was one fewer than his fellow full-back, making it the first time in Premier League history that two defenders from the same team have each registered double-digit assists in a season.

Their output – defensively and offensively – helped Jürgen Klopp's side deliver the third-highest points total in top-flight history and produce a league-high 21 clean sheets.

The duo's willingness to contribute in the final third was also fuelled by the desire to emerge the winner of a light-hearted assist battle.

"We have private competitions that drive each other on because we enjoy seeing each other doing well," Robertson said ahead of the Champions League final.

"I get as much buzz at seeing him assist a goal or making a goalline challenge than I do for myself."
