Andy Robertson is happy to be the chief supplier of Liverpool's goals rather than put them in himself.

The Scotland international increased his assist tally to five against Fulham last weekend when, eight minutes into the second half, he swung in a brilliant cross that Xherdan Shaqiri cushioned beyond the goalkeeper.

Robertson himself later went close to increasing the final scoreline of 2-0 but had a powerful drive stopped by Sergio Rico, meaning the left-back remains on one Reds goal.

That’s a statistic the No.26 would like to change soon, though not at the expense of his position at the summit of the team’s assist chart so far this season – or his defensive duties.

“It was close,” he told Liverpoolfc.com of his chance to net on Sunday.

“We did a shooting session [in training ahead of the game] and I scored two; the gaffer pulled me afterwards and said, ‘I’m so proud of you!’ Obviously he was just joking!

“I thought to just get a clean contact – the ‘keeper has made a good save. I think I could have done better with it. Hopefully it’s coming but I’m happy to hopefully keep giving assists and clean sheets, that’s my bread and butter.”

Robertson continued: “I love assisting because it’s a lot more natural to me than scoring. If I can help the team by putting a cross in for Shaq – and he made a great finish – it’s always nice to get an assist and contribute going forward.

“We have had a lot of clean sheets this season and we need to keep doing that because if we get a clean sheet, that’s half the battle to win the game.”
