Jürgen Klopp believes Liverpool's last two outings will have prepared them well for the challenge of facing Cardiff City this afternoon - and feels they also proved why every member of the squad has a contribution to make to the outcome of this season.

The Reds defeated Huddersfield Town 1-0 in a hard-fought Premier League encounter at the John Smith’s Stadium last weekend before recording a 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League in midweek.

Klopp’s side were made to work hard for both wins in games they were ‘favourites’ in prior to kick-off, and the manager expects Cardiff will arrive at Anfield ready to frustrate their hosts.

He wrote in his column in the official matchday programme: “You only have to look to our last Premier League fixture against Huddersfield to learn that the points on the table doesn’t always reflect where a team is at in terms of performance levels and ability.

“I know Cardiff secured a fantastic win against Fulham in their last fixture, but even prior to that they were playing outstandingly well and deserved more from games, if luck and circumstance had gone their way – against Tottenham, at Wembley, being the prime example. They were brilliant in that game, aggressive and positive in all aspects.

“I think we know today we are in for a real battle – if we don’t recognise this and respond to this then we are foolish.

“Our last two fixtures should prepare us well for this afternoon. We learned against Huddersfield and Red Star that having healthy respect for your opponent’s strengths is important, because you realise before the whistle goes you need to work harder than them to win. This is mandatory.

“Cardiff were able to sit at home, feet up and watch, while we had to fight and run hard until the 94th minute to get the result we wanted and needed against Red Star, so their motivation will be at the highest level without doubt and they’ll be relishing this.”

Liverpool utilised their squad for their last two fixtures, making three changes at Huddersfield and then five versus Red Star.

Klopp continued: “Aside from recognising having the right attitude is essential, I think the last two fixtures have also demonstrated the importance of every player here knowing they must be ready at all times to contribute. At Huddersfield and against Red Star we made changes and players who’ve had to be patient were given opportunity during matches.

“I say ‘during matches’ because the opportunity to contribute is there every day at Melwood – and credit to these boys, they do exactly that. But I know players crave the chance to show that contribution on game-day, so it is fantastic as their manager when you see them maximise it.

“Alberto Moreno has been outstandingly good since the summer through until now, but his contribution so far has been mainly away from the public gaze. This is because Andy Robertson has been brilliant for us. When Albie came on against Belgrade he encapsulated what is needed if we are to achieve our goals.”
