Trent Alexander-Arnold has come a long way.

Thursday marks the second anniversary of the Academy graduate’s first-team bow for Liverpool, a 2-1 League Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield that feels like an ‘I was there’-moment-in-waiting for those in attendance.

Since October 25, 2016, there have been 53 further senior appearances for the Reds.

There has been a Champions League final, a full international debut and the chance to represent England at the World Cup.

Alexander-Arnold has indeed come a long way.

On Wednesday, the 20-year-old Scouser hopes to register game No.55 for his boyhood club, when they take on Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

Before then, he took time to reflect on a 24-month period that has featured milestone after milestone.

“[It’s gone] really quickly. It’s flown by,” Alexander-Arnold told Liverpoolfc.com.

What would his response have been had someone told him before that Spurs match what the next two years would entail?

“I’m not sure I’d have believed them! I probably would’ve told them they were a bit crazy, but obviously these things happen and I’m grateful for the opportunities and the mentorship that I’ve been given,” he said.

“I’ve been put down the right path so far and hopefully I’ll keep going. I’ll keep working hard and hopefully there’s many more milestones to come.

“It’s something that I enjoy and it’s something that I’m proud of: to be able to say that I play for Liverpool Football Club. It’s something that I want to carry on saying for as long as I can.”

Alexander-Arnold could, perhaps, be forgiven for being satisfied with his lot.

That he’s not speaks volumes about his character and the direction he strives to take his career in.

“It’s that drive and that hunger to reach the next level and to push yourself forward, to keep working hard and to try to better yourself every day,” he continued.

“That’s probably the mindset that I’ve got, is that every day’s an opportunity to get better, even if it’s by the smallest margins it’s still an opportunity and one that you shouldn’t waste because you don’t know when it could be all over.”
