Joe Gomez is in line to make a milestone appearance for Liverpool in Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Napoli.

The 21-year-old defender will play his 50th Reds match if selected at Stadio San Paolo in Italy.

It will be Gomez's 10th game in Europe for the club and he is yet to taste defeat in continental competition.

The youngster made his European debut against Bordeaux in 2015 and most recently helped Liverpool beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 at Anfield in this season's Champions League opener.

Napoli and Liverpool have been drawn together once before in European competition. In 2010-11, they met in the Europa League group stage with the teams drawing 0-0 in Italy.

In the Anfield return, Napoli took the lead through Ezequiel Lavezzi, but half-time substitute Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick in the last 15 minutes to secure a 3-1 win.

Liverpool have lost just two of their last 14 European games at an opposition ground.

In the last eight visits to Italy, the Reds have kept six clean sheets.

Only FC Porto, with a goalless draw at Anfield last season, have prevented Liverpool from scoring in the last 18 European fixtures.

Sadio Mane has scored six goals in his last five European away matches for the Reds.

Roberto Firmino has played in every one of Liverpool's 29 European games under Jürgen Klopp.

The Brazilian, who scored the winner against PSG last month, holds the club record for most goals in a European group stage. He scored six in six appearances last season.

Firmino has scored a total of 12 goals for the Reds in the European Cup - only Steven Gerrard (30) and Ian Rush (14) have scored more.

Liverpool have scored 50 goals in their last 16 games in the Champions League, while they have scored at least twice in 10 of the last 12 European matches.

They last met Italian opposition in last season's Champions League semi-final when they beat Roma 7-6 on aggregate.

Only once before in 14 European group stages have Liverpool won their opening two games - doing so in the 2008-09 Champions League. That season they topped the group with 14 points ahead of Atletico Madrid, Marseille and PSV Eindhoven.

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has faced Liverpool eight times during his coaching career, winning five and losing three. He was in charge of AC Milan in the Champions League finals of 2005 (lost) and 2007 (won).
