Reaching last season’s Champions League final did not satisfy Jordan Henderson, who has spoken of Liverpool’s desire to become the best team in Europe.

A memorable 2017-18 European campaign ultimately ended in heartbreak for the Reds, who were defeated by Real Madrid in the final in Kiev.

Jürgen Klopp’s side begin their quest to go one better this term on Tuesday with the visit of Paris Saint-Germain in the opening round of Group C fixtures - and Henderson cannot wait for Champions League football to return to Anfield.

“It’s a big game, a massive European game for us, but one we’re looking forward to,” the captain told Liverpoolfc.com.

“[They’re] special nights at Anfield, the European nights, so we look forward to it. PSG are a fantastic team, but I feel as if we’re going in the right direction.

“We’re playing some really good football and we’re confident, so we’ve just got to continue that and I’m sure if we do that we’ll cause them problems.

“I think last season was obviously a good step in the right direction, but at the end of the day we didn’t win anything.

“So there’s a lot of room for improvement and this season we want to make that step closer and try and get some silverware because ultimately that’s what we’re here to try to do: be the best team in England and in Europe as well. We’ve got to keep winning games.”

Having started the Premier League season with five consecutive wins - the most recent of which coming over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday - Liverpool head into the clash with the French champions in fine form.

Henderson, though, feels the Reds will need to perform at their peak to get a positive result against PSG.

“We’ve started really well in the Premier League, but we want to start well in every competition so it’s a big game for us,” the midfielder stated.

“We always want to improve. I thought the lads were brilliant at the weekend but we also want to keep improving, we want to keep getting better and hopefully we can do that because it’s [against] a world-class team, world-class players.

“We’ll need to be at our very best to get something from the game. But if we are at our best, which I’m sure we will be, then like I say, we can cause them problems.”
