Trent Alexander-Arnold has been advised to keep a diary to ensure he maximises the experience of representing England at the World Cup.

Liverpool’s No.66 was rewarded for a fine season at club level with a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man party for the ongoing tournament in Russia.

After impressing on his senior international debut in a friendly against Costa Rica earlier this month, Alexander-Arnold could make his competitive bow for his country in their opening Group G fixture with Tunisia on Monday evening.

Steve McMahon knows exactly how the 19-year-old is feeling, with the former Reds midfielder having been part of England’s squad at Italia ’90.

And McMahon thinks Alexander-Arnold should commit everything he learns while away at his first major senior international tournament to paper, so he can remember the time clearly in the future.

“Everything,” McMahon told Liverpoolfc.com, when asked what being at the World Cup could do for Alexander-Arnold’s development.

“This is a success story for him and for Liverpool, because it can only make him better. It’ll be exciting for Trent [and] he should come back buzzing even if he doesn’t play a game [because] he’s been part of the set-up at a World Cup finals - something youngsters don’t tend to get.

“He should be looking forward to it. He had a tremendous season with Liverpool, and my piece of advice to him would be to keep a diary.

“I wish I’d have kept a diary every day - training, things I did, things I liked, things I didn’t like. I wish I’d wrote it all down and savoured the atmosphere so I’d have a scrapbook as such for that World Cup finals, because in 20, 30 years’ time, you’ve forgotten about what it was like and you forget all the little details that you went through.

“Keep a diary, a scrapbook that gives you a detailed analysis of the World Cup finals that you went to for your first time.”
