Steven Gerrard feels Liverpool are on the pathway to a ‘special’ era under the stewardship of Jürgen Klopp.

The Reds will compete in their first Champions League final in 11 years later this month after seeing off AS Roma 7-6 on aggregate to earn the right to take on Real Madrid in Kiev.

Despite a 4-2 defeat on the night, Wednesday’s last-four second leg at Stadio Olimpico will live long in the memory - thanks in no small part to the jubilant celebrations shared between players and supporters following the final whistle.

Those scenes were just the latest example of the synergy Klopp has fostered at Anfield since his arrival in October 2015.

And Gerrard has cited the ‘world-class’ manager as the driving force behind Liverpool’s resurgence as a force both domestically and in Europe.

“I know what it means to these people, I've lived around them. It's a special club, it's a unique club,” the legendary former captain said on BT Sport.

“These fans just want this club to compete, they want to go and watch their team and be proud of their team and at the moment this manager has got them flying.

“He's got them bubbling and I believe if they can go this one step further and get over the line against Madrid, this could be the start of something special under this manager because he's world class.

“He's brought a philosophy here that the fans have bought right into and the players are delivering for him week in, week out.”
