We now recall a memorable away day at Arsenal as Kenny Dalglish's brilliant team of 1987-88 gave us a glimpse of what was to come in the forthcoming campaign.

Highbury was never an easy ground to visit and getting three points on the opening day sent out a big message to the rest of the league.

Having lost their title crown to Everton and with Ian Rush departed for Italy, Dalglish was launching a brand new side in the capital.

John Barnes, Peter Beardsley and John Aldridge lined up for the very first time in the new silver away kit and they didn't disappoint.

It took just nine minutes for the trio to make their mark. Beardsley fed Barnes down the left wing and the winger produced a perfect cross which was met by the head of Aldridge for the opening goal.

Paul Davis levelled the scores for the home side in front of an incredible crowd of 54,703.

But, with just two minutes to go, Steve Nicol won the match with a quite incredible 40-yard header as the ball soared into the top corner of the net.
