Liverpool's first European Cup crown arrived on a glorious Rome night in 1977 when the Reds beat German side Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Coming a few days after losing to Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley, Bob Paisley's side bounced back in style.

Terry McDermott fired the Reds into the lead only to see it cancelled out by an unstoppable strike from Allan Simonsen.

Tommy Smith, on what was meant to be his final game for the club, restored the lead with a magnificent header from a corner before Phil Neal cooly slotted home a penalty to ensure the European Cup would be coming to Merseyside.
