Torres: I'll never forget your song

The Spaniard spent three-and-a-half goal-laden years with the Reds, during which the Kop thrived on 'bouncing' to the ditty they had created for the prolific No.9 they adored.

Following his transfer to Chelsea in January 2011, however, the reception for Torres upon his appearances as an opponent in L4 were rather frostier.

But when he emerged for the second half of the All-Star game alongside Luis Suarez in a dream attack for Steven Gerrard's XI, the striker shared the huge applause.

And as the 31-year-old went in search of what would have been a poignant goal at the ground he used to call home, the supporters struck up several renditions of their Torres song.

"It was very emotional, I didn't know how to react. I wasn't expecting them to sing the song," he told Liverpoolfc.com after the contest had ended in a 2-2 draw.

"I still remember the great games we had here at Anfield in the Champions League, in the league and fighting for trophies. I have the song in my head, it was so important for me.

"Those three-and-a-half years changed my entire life and career. I remember the song from the Kop in important games. To hear that once again is something I will never, ever forget."

Torres continued: "It's difficult to explain what you feel when you are at Anfield and you can play a football match here. It's difficult to explain when you are in the home team - it's a bit different when you are in the away team.

"Today was a day I'll never forget, for sure. It was so emotional to play with my teammates again; we had a great time playing together here for Liverpool.

"And especially the reaction of all the supporters. Everybody knows Liverpool fans are different class. Today is a day to remember for me. I am lucky to be able to be here and I just want to thank everybody for their welcome."

As the Spain international was preparing to bid farewell to Liverpool four years ago, the club was completing a deal to bring Suarez to Anfield to replace his goals.

Reds fans were denied the opportunity to watch the pair join forces in the same team - a vision that finally became reality in the All-Star match arranged by the Liverpool FC Foundation.

Torres said: "He is a good friend, we have known each other for a long time. I obviously follow him. Everything he did at Liverpool was just amazing, the way he came in and took the responsibility. He left with fantastic stats.

"It was the first time we have played together. We were saying in the dressing room that we had to enjoy this game. You never know if it's the first or the last [chance], you never know in football.

"To play with a player like him up front is a privilege. It was great to be on the pitch with great players who couldn't play together for Liverpool in the past.

"Hopefully the fans enjoyed the game. We have the pictures we can show to everybody, and for ourselves, that once I played with Luis and Stevie together."

Ahead of the match, Torres had explained how he would have gone to any lengths to ensure he could be present at Anfield and link up with Gerrard again.

The duo's creative combination as teammates in the past was the scourge of many a defence in the Premier League and Europe, bringing the best out of each man.

"I've said many times that Stevie is the best player I have ever played with and I don't think I will play with a player like him again," reiterated Torres of his respect for the No.8.

"He changed my game, the way I used to approach games, my ambition, everything. When he called me to invite me to the game, of course I would be there, I would do anything to be there.

"It was important to play with Stevie one more time, who knows if it is the last time. All my great memories, most of them are next to him.

"I know it's a very important day for him so this was the minimum thing I could do for him, to be with him. It was also nice to see Pepe and Xabi and Ryan, because we had a fantastic time here together."
