Liverpool FC Foundation Football College won a memorable victory over one of the country's top sides in the prestigious English Colleges FA Cup earlier this week.

The Reds youngsters ran out 4-3 winners in a pulsating second-round clash against Myerscough College at the Merseyside Police Ground on Riversdale Road.

The Prestonian outfit were reigning champions in the competition; however, they were unlocked by the Foundation College's first team in an encounter which went all the way to extra-time.

It means Liverpool progress to the next round and continue on the road to the national final, which takes place at St George's Park.

Opened in 2012, the Liverpool FC Foundation Football College is based at Wyncote Sports Ground, where pupils are equipped with top-of-the-range facilities supplied by the University of Liverpool.

The college is open to boys and girls aged between 16 and 19 and students work under the guidance of experienced staff from Liverpool's Academy, to hone their football skills as well as gain academic qualifications.

The college also plays an important role acting as a safety net for players released from the Academy.

One such example of this is former Liverpool U18s starlet Nathan Quirk, who was instrumental in the victory over Myerscough.

Nathan helped pull the strings from midfield as Liverpool dominated the first half and raced to a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace of penalties from Tom Owens.

However, the opposition fought back into the game to level proceedings at 2-2 and take the match to extra-time, courtesy of a late equaliser.

The Reds remained calm and focused and soon retained their lead through a sensational curling free-kick from Charlie Waugh.

Tom Owens then put the game beyond Myerscough to clinch his hat-trick before the opposition grabbed a late consolation goal.

Coach Carl Macauley said: "Our first-half display was the best this season against a very good side. We were winning the ball high up the pitch and our front three players linked very well. The team are raising the bar all the time."

Meanwhile, the Foundation College's second team also progressed to the third-round of the National Cup, courtesy of a 3-2 win over Myerscough in the corresponding fixture. Adam Kelly, Jamie Clague and Josh Hamilton were all on the score-sheet in Preston.
