A special football match between local military veterans and a United States RAF team was played at LFC's Academy on Saturday to coincide with National Armed Forces Day.

Liverpool FC Foundation, the club's official charity, recently launched a military veterans programme which aims to re-engage ex-service personnel with physical activity and help to recapture their spirit of service. The Foundation's military veterans activities form part of the Liverpool Veterans programme.

The veterans took on the US military team, based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, and over 70 family and friends attended the game which was played in high spirits and ended in a 2-0 win for the US side.

John Frost, US RAF Lakenbeath, said: "It was a fantastic and unique day for the lads and their families.

"We all have many friends who have left the armed forces so we know difficult it is to adapt back into civilian life after the military.

"However, this programme is great and it really gives men and women a sense of comradeship they enjoyed in the army."

The programme, part funded by Typhoo Tea, aims to engage with the 30,000 military veterans currently in Liverpool and provide support for when they return to civilian life.

Chris Hall, head of marketing at Typhoo, said: "Typhoo are extremely proud to support the Armed forces in collaboration with Liverpool FC Foundation as part of our continued Sports for All program."

The Foundation's initiative also provides veterans with opportunities to education and counselling services which opens up pathways to employment opportunities.

Mark Haig, Liverpool FC Foundation head of operations, said: "Our Foundation's military veterans programme provides various opportunities for veterans after the armed forces and with so many veterans in Liverpool it's a huge area for us.

"Our military veterans activities forms part of the Liverpool Veterans programme which we will be working closely with as our scheme develops.

"We have been delighted with today and I look forward to many more days like this as our programme develops."
