By late that afternoon and after a tense 120 minutes of football, You'll Never Walk Alone was reverberating beneath the old Twin Towers once more and customary toasts were being raised to the heroes of the hour.

None more so deserving of praise was Ronnie Whelan whose brace that day secured Liverpool their second League Cup win as they beat Tottenham 3-1.

"It's a long time ago but people still talk about it," Whelan told Liverpoolfc.tv. "For me it was the thrill of being at Wembley for the first time. Me and Rushie were rooming together and we just hoped and prayed it would go well for us.

"We were both young lads and we both scored on our Wembley debuts. It was just sheer elation - I think you can see that from the way I reacted. I was just ecstatic. My first goal was a late one and it kept us in the game.

"We were on a good run coming up to Wembley, bearing in mind we had been 12th on Boxing Day 1981. Tottenham were a good side with the likes of Hoddle and Ardilles. But we played brilliant on the day and got our reward."

Spurs were ahead after Steve Archibald put them into the lead with just 11 minutes on the clock. The Londoners had never lost at Wembley, but with three minutes remaining Whelan forced extra time when he equalised for Liverpool.

Manager Bob Paisley ordered the Reds' players to remain on their feet during the break before the start of extra-time - and the gaffer's motivational techniques worked as Whelan grabbed his second on 111 minutes.

Ian Rush ensured the trophy would be heading back to Anfield when his late strike made the result safe.

Similarities can be drawn with this season's campaign as back in 1982, the Reds began their campaign against Exeter.

The Reds recorded an 11-0 aggregate win over Exeter in the second round with a certain Kenny Dalglish netting in both legs.
