Mark Clattenburg has been selected to take charge of the Carling Cup final between Liverpool and Cardiff City on Sunday, February 26.

The Durham-born official holds the post-war record for the youngest referee to oversee an English Football League match (at the age of 25 in August 2000) but this will be his first big Wembley clash.

At 29, Clattenburg set another marker as the youngest person to referee a Premier League fixture.

The 36-year-old has taken charge of a Liverpool final before but that was at Academy level in the 2006-07 FA Youth Cup final. He oversaw both legs as the Reds beat rivals Manchester United 4-3 on penalties at Old Trafford.

His assistants at Wembley will be Simon Beck of Bedfordshire and Mick McDonough of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The fourth official for the final will be Anthony Taylor from Cheshire.
