Flanno targets areas to improve

The 18-year-old wowed supporters at the end of last season with a series of mature displays after being plucked from the reserves.

He was then selected at right-back for our opening day draw with Sunderland in the absence of injured England international Glen Johnson.

Flanagan knows it won't be easy to retain his place once Johnson has left the treatment room, with the impressive Martin Kelly also sure to be in regular action.

But the Scouser is determined to do everything possible to get his name on Kenny Dalglish's teamsheet.

"I just want to continue improving," Flanagan told this week's LFC Magazine. "There are areas where I need to get better such as going forward and crossing. I need to work on everything.

"With lads like Glen and Martin there is plenty of competition in the squad. That's always good to have. It means if you do get in the team you have to take the chance. Martin is only a few years older than me. He came in last season and did brilliantly. He showed exactly how to grab an opportunity."

Flanagan's pursuit of pitch time could be aided by a versatility which has already seen him operate in three positions for Liverpool.

"My natural position is right-back but I'd play anywhere for the club," he added. "Left-back is okay too and I came on in midfield against Valencia. I don't mind if I have a new role as a holding midfielder now.

"Playing on either side isn't much different. You have the same job to do, you're just on the other flank. Obviously I'm more comfortable on the right because I'm right-footed, but the left side is fine."
