Kenny Dalglish's vintage 1987-88 Liverpool side produced their defining performance on April 13 that season – a 5-0 rout of Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

A near-flawless display saw the Reds simply overrun Forest with a collective ingenuity of thought and footwork that no defence could have handled.

Ray Houghton kicked off the scoring with a helping hand from John Barnes, and John Aldridge (two), Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley suitably embellished a scoreline that would have been even greater were it not for visiting goalkeeper Steve Sutton and the woodwork.

“It’s hard to describe actually,” stated the watching Sir Tom Finney. “Because I think that’s one of the finest exhibitions of football I’ve ever seen in my life. The skills and the speed the game was played at was absolutely tremendous.”

Liverpool would go on to win the league by nine points, losing just two of 40 matches, with this their magnificent peak.
