"The Europeans showed that building from the back is the only way to play."

The words of Bill Shankly, whose short-term pain became a prelude to Liverpool's long-term gain.

In November 1973, the Reds were beaten home and away by Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup. Shankly's resignation the following summer meant he would never again manage Liverpool in Europe.

However, lessons were learned from the humbling at the hands of Miljan Miljanic's slick Red Star side. The Reds' Boot Room brains trust were convinced tactical and stylistic change was needed if the club were to prosper on European football's grandest stage.

And prosper they did, going on to lift the European Cup no less than four times between 1977 and 1984.

Ahead of Liverpool's current vintage hosting Red Star at Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday, LFCTV teamed up with Tifo to produce an animated video that tells the story of a defeat that sparked a footballing revolution.
