Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool had made a strong start to the 1989-90 season as they attempted to win back the title following the last-day heartbreak of losing to Arsenal the previous term.

And five matches into the campaign, the Reds set a new club record in the top flight with a 9-0 mauling of Crystal Palace that sent out a clear message of intent to the rest of the league.

But it wasn't just the incredible scoreline that made this match memorable; it was also the day that John Aldridge bid an emotional and unusual farewell to the Kop.

At 5-0 up, Liverpool were awarded a penalty and the fans on the Anfield terraces made it known to Dalglish who they wanted to take it.

Aldridge, who had agreed a transfer to Real Sociedad, emerged from the bench, replacing his former strike partner Peter Beardsley, ran straight up to the penalty spot and netted in front of his adoring Kop.

It was a great gesture from Dalglish and a stunning victory for a side that would go on to win an 18th league championship.

For the record, the other goalscorers were Steve Nicol (2), Ian Rush, Beardsley, Steve McMahon, Gary Gillespie, John Barnes and Glenn Hysen.
