The second annual Run for the 96 5K was launched this week, with the charity event in May set to celebrate the lives of the 96 fans who died at Hillsborough.

Following the success of the inaugural edition last April, when 2,500 people took part and more than £8,000 was raised, the fun run in Liverpool’s Stanley Park is back for 2016.

This year’s event was launched with the help of the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community – the respective charities of the two Barclays Premier League clubs and official partners of the run for a second time.

The Run for the 96 5K remembers those who lost their lives on April 15, 1989, their families and the survivors of the disaster, while simultaneously raising important funds for the local community.

Runners are invited to fundraise for the two charities, with all money donated to the cause split equally between the Liverpool FC Foundation and Everton in the Community to help them continue their work across Merseyside.

Reds legend Alan Kennedy, Voice of Anfield George Sephton and young people benefiting from the projects overseen by the organisations were among those in attendance at the launch.

The event is the brainchild of Liverpool fan Dom Williams, who said: “I first had the idea about Run for the 96 5K four years ago. I wanted to create something positive in memory of the 96.

“I thought a 5K fun run would be a way of engaging the wider community. Together with BTR, we made it a reality last year and the legacy is now supporting the work of the two official charities.”

The 2016 Run for the 96 5K will take place on Sunday May 22 – for more information, to sign up for the event or to make a donation, please click here.
