LFC FoundationTalking Tai Chi at the Brunny
Paula and her 84-year-old mum have discovered a new passion thanks to weekly Tai Chi sessions at The Brunswick Youth and Community Centre.
The pair first heard about the class through word of mouth and were immediately struck by the welcoming atmosphere.
The Red Neighbours Tai Chi sessions are made possible by the Premier League and Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Fund. Administered through the Premier League Foundation, the funding helps football clubs to tackle inequality and respond to local challenges, supporting people and their communities to be more inclusive.
The sessions take place every Thursday morning and are led by a qualified instructor who ensures that they combins gentle physical activity with social engagement to create a holistic approach that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
Paula said: “It is very empowering to walk into a new group and to mix with such an interesting group of people. The Tai Chi has taught me to try new things. I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I have.”
Before joining, Paula admitted she struggled with confidence where meeting new people felt daunting, and physical stiffness made everyday movement harder. Now, things have changed as Paula said: "I feel less stiff, my balance is better, and I can breathe more easily. Tai Chi is great, especially for finding some calm – I always leave feeling good.”
LFC Women's Ambassador Natasha Dowie and former LFC Women's player Becky Easton have joined in the sessions and noted the benefits. Tash said: “I’d never considered the benefits of Tai Chi, but the gentle exercise has really helped me both physically and mentally. I’m so happy I was asked to attend!”
Paula sums up her experience with a simple but powerful thought.
"Tai Chi, like life itself, is a journey and not a race. I have something really healthy and positive to look forward to every week, as does my mum. The group is very lucky to have such a good tutor and the LFC Foundation looking after them.”
Sadly, The Brunny cannot accommodate our usual booking for PLPFA funded Tai Chi session, but rather than let our community down, we've been proactive and moved the session online. Using a virtual space to connect isn't knew to the Red Neighbours team; we adapt and evolve to meet need! Contact: Christine Mounsey on Christine.Mounsey@liverpoolfc.com for more information.
