LFC FoundationLFC Foundation and Right To Play shining a light on Mercy
“My dream is to become a pilot. It lets you fly a plane to countries you have never been to before.” – Mercy, 13
At LFC Foundation, we believe every girl deserves the chance to dream big and achieve her potential. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Right To Play on the Save Her Seat project in the Serengeti and Tarime districts of Tanzania, a programme that is transforming lives for girls like Mercy.
In rural Tanzania, many girls encounter considerable barriers, including early marriage and child labour, which prevent them from accessing education, shaping their futures and fulfilling their potential. Through the project – which is funded by the UK government through UK Aid Match, LFC Foundation, and generous donations from the public – we are helping to empower thousands of girls to stay in school, claim their rights and develop critical life skills.
13-year-old Mercy is one of the girls who is thriving thanks to play-based sessions at her school. As a member of the Right To Play-supported Girls’ Club at school, she has learnt how to advocate for her rights and challenge harmful and discriminatory practices that girls in her community often face.
Learning through play is having a transformative impact for Mercy, and she is also able to share these lessons with her two sisters. Mercy said: “Playing is so important because it keeps my body active and fit, stimulates my mind when in class, and teaches me things I didn’t know before. I enjoy playing netball and a game called ‘Safe Circle’. They improve my physical strength and help me learn.”
The project, which has been reaching girls in 40 primary schools since 2023, is equipping Mercy with the confidence to learn, lead and pursue her dream of becoming a pilot.
