LFC FoundationChampion of the Month: August 2026
Congratulations to Clifford who is our Champion of the Month for August 2026!
Clifford was nominated for the award by LFC Foundation Senior Inclusion Coordinator, Liam Gerrard for his fantastic commitment towards our SMF Inclusion Football Programme.
Clifford Southall, affectionately known as “Cliffy” by the team, has been involved with the Foundation for over 15 years. He currently attends weekly SMF Inclusion sessions and is a regular at fixtures hosted at ASCC. He is also part of the Ability Counts League 3 Disability Team, taking part in monthly league and tournament fixtures at Liverpool County FA. All this at the age of 64.
Being involved in football has helped Cliffy stay physically active while also supporting his emotional wellbeing and enabling him to build lifelong friendships. Over the years, he has become a familiar and respected figure within the programme, with many participants recognising and looking up to him for his commitment and positivity. His impact and presence at sessions are clear to see.
Our SMF Inclusion sessions have provided the platform for this, not only for Cliffy, but for hundreds of participants over the years. The programme offers a safe, welcoming and cost-free space where people can take part in a sport they love, develop meaningful social connections, and proudly represent the club they support through fixtures and tournaments, something Cliffy continues to do with great enthusiasm.
In the words of Liam Gerrard, who leads the Inclusion sessions:
"Going forward, I have no doubt Cliffy will continue to engage in sessions for as long as he is physically able to get to ASCC or our other venues. I can easily see him remaining part of the programme for another 10 years or more. He is reliable and a suitable role model for older participants that consistent physical activity, despite their disabilities, is achievable and can form a staple part of their lives."
His story is a testament to the power of inclusive sport, demonstrating how sustained participation can support physical health, emotional wellbeing, friendship, and community connection over the long term.
Congratulations Clifford and keep up the amazing work!
