Liverpool have approached the agent of Aston Villa left back Jordan Amavi as he recovers from a knee injury, according to reports.

L'Equipe claim Liverpool are keen on the 22-year-old defender, who ruptured his anterior cruciate knee ligament while playing for France's U21 side in November.

The report states the Anfield club face competition from AC Milan and two un-named French clubs for the signature of the former Nice star.

Amavi cost Villa almost £9million when they signed the promising youngster last summer and he showed his potential during the early months of the campaign, despite the side's struggles under Tim Sherwood.

Liverpool are looking to add left-back competition to challenge Alberto Moreno next term while Villa will be hoping to recoup their outlay on Amavi if they decide to sell him when the transfer window opens on July 1.
