FeatureWhich grounds have Merseyside derbies been played at?
Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium will host its first Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool make the short trip to the Blues’ new home for a 2pm BST kick-off in the Premier League.
It will be the seventh different venue at which the two clubs have clashed.
Derby No.1 was held at Goodison Park on October 13, 1894 and won 3-0 by Everton.
Exactly five weeks later, Anfield hosted its first Merseyside derby and this time it ended in a 2-2 draw, with David Hannah and Jimmy Ross the Liverpool goalscorers – the latter from a last-minute penalty.
Of course, the vast majority of the 247 fixtures to date between Liverpool and Everton were subsequently played at either of those two grounds.
However, they have met at four neutral venues too.
Villa Park was the location for their FA Cup semi-final tie on the last day of March 1906, where Everton prevailed 2-0.
It would be 44 years before the fourth different derby venue: Maine Road.
Again it was an FA Cup semi-final that brought the two teams against each other on neutral turf, on March 25, 1950.
But this time, Liverpool were the winners; Bob Paisley and Billy Liddell supplied goals in either half for a 2-0 victory.
Manchester City’s former home held three more Merseyside derbies – and proved a lucky charm for the Reds.
After a 2-2 draw there in the FA Cup semi-finals in 1977, they returned four days later for a replay, in which goals from Phil Neal, Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy gave Liverpool a 3-0 win.
And when the League Cup final went to a replay in 1984, Graeme Souness’ first-half goal at Maine Road secured Liverpool the trophy at Everton’s expense.
In between times, Old Trafford was used as the battleground for a Merseyside derby FA Cup semi-final in March 1971.
Bill Shankly’s Reds trailed to an Alan Ball goal on 10 minutes but came back to eliminate the Blues with a 2-1 result courtesy of Alun Evans and Brian Hall efforts.
The clubs did not meet at Wembley until that League Cup final of 1984, which ended goalless.
Five further derbies have taken place at the national stadium so far, including victories for the Reds in the FA Cup finals of 1986 (3-1) and 1989 (3-2).
The most recent was in the semi-finals of that competition in April 2012, when goals from Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll overturned a deficit to clinch Liverpool a 2-1 win.
