LFC FoundationHelping to build skills on and off the pitch
This season, our work with the U14s girls academy has focused on supporting the development of young athletes growing their technical and physical abilities, their mindset, behaviours and psychological skills.
The programme began during pre-season, when players were encouraged to take ownership of defining the culture they wanted to create as a team. Through a series of workshops and discussions with coaches, the group explored their values and identified what they wanted their environment to look, sound and feel like.
Together, the players established a set of shared standards and behaviours, creating a collective understanding of how they wanted to conduct themselves both individually and as teammates. This process also helped develop the confidence to hold themselves, their peers and staff accountable to those standards throughout the season.
Alongside their Individual Development Plans (IDPs), players have taken part in regular classroom-based sessions designed to explore the mental side of performance. While IDPs primarily focus on physical and technical development, these sessions have encouraged players to reflect on the behaviours, habits, decision-making and mindset required to excel in their position.
The programme has also challenged players to consider who they want to be as individuals and the qualities they want to bring to their performances. Through a range of practical activities, they have explored strategies to help manage the demands of balancing football and school, including breathing techniques, mindfulness and focusing on the aspects of performance they can control.
A key message throughout has been that every player is different. By helping individuals better understand themselves and identify the approaches that work best for them, the programme has reinforced that there is no one-size-fits-all pathway to learning, development and performance.
Importantly, players have been encouraged to apply their learning beyond the classroom. After each session, they have been challenged to take at least one idea onto the pitch and put it into practice, helping to strengthen the link between reflection and performance.
Parents have also played an important role in the programme's success. Resources and practical guidance have been shared throughout the season to help families understand the areas being explored and support meaningful conversations around their child's development. This has included encouraging a mindset of curiosity over criticism, helping create positive environments where young people can learn and grow.
By developing greater self-awareness, encouraging ownership of individual development and equipping players with practical tools for success, the programme aims to help the U14s thrive both on and off the pitch as they continue their footballing journey.
