Philippe Coutinho sat out training at Melwood on Wednesday - but remains on course to be fit for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Southampton at Anfield on Sunday.

The Brazilian attacker limped off early on in Monday’s hard-fought win over Watford after suffering a dead leg in a collision with Adrian Mariappa.

Coutinho was in a lot of discomfort but has responded well to treatment and Liverpool are confident he will be ready for the Saints’ visit. The hope is that he will return to full training on either Thursday or Friday.

Wednesday was a second recovery day for a number of the players who featured against Watford. Daniel Sturridge worked away from the main group with fitness coach Andreas Kornmayer.

Emre Can, whose stunning strike earned the Reds victory at Vicarage Road, was in the thick of the action.

Manager Jurgen Klopp oversaw a light training session in the sunshine with the preparations for the Southampton game set to be stepped up on Thursday.
