Jürgen Klopp has again expressed his deep disappointment at some of the unsavoury incidents that took place outside Anfield prior to Liverpool's Champions League encounter with Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

The manager used his pre-Everton press conference on Friday afternoon to praise an ‘outstanding gesture’ from the Blues’ medical team, who disembarked their team bus as they returned home after the fixture to tend to a Reds supporter who had been injured in a road traffic accident near the stadium.

Earlier in the evening, thousands of Liverpool fans had lined the same areas outside Anfield to greet the arrival of both sides’ coaches ahead of kick-off, although the actions of a minority spoiled those scenes as the City transport was struck by objects thrown at it, causing damage to the vehicle.

The club issued an apology to Manchester City prior to the game for the actions of those who decided to throw objects at the opponents’ transport – and Klopp remains angered by their behaviour.

He said: “I feel really embarrassed, ashamed. It is like, ‘what?’ I cannot understand how you give this opportunity to the people to create something wonderful like this usually is [and then this happens].

“It was already on the edge with the flares or whatever, which are not legal, but it is nice and special. But [some] people do not understand the rules.

“It was a historical moment because I was part of the last time it happened. I don’t have the words. It is idiots in this situation. How can you do that? It is not a little bit funny. It is dangerous, it feels bad.

“I was on a bus once and a rock was thrown and we had a hole. It is not [a bit of a joke]… you feel it, you feel it. It was against Cologne and someone threw it through the window. You think, ‘if that hits my head, what happens?’

“It is not funny. It is actually the complete opposite and I am really angry about it.”
