Jürgen Klopp has yet to decide upon his line-up for Wednesday’s Premier League Asia Trophy encounter with Crystal Palace, but insists no-one should be reading too much into his team selections at this stage of pre-season.

Liverpool will contest their third summer friendly against Frank de Boer’s side at the Hong Kong International Stadium following encounters with Tranmere Rovers and Wigan Athletic.

The Reds will look to give playing time to each of the 25 that have made the journey to Asia over the course of their two forthcoming matches; however, Klopp has explained why players and fans alike should not make assumptions based on the starting XIs chosen.

Asked about a potential line-up for the Palace game, the manager told Liverpoolfc.com: “We will have to see. We have to see who feels how – that’s what makes most sense in pre-season; it makes no sense to make line-ups three or four days before the game.

“I know what I want to see, what I want to see from all of the boys, so who starts and who comes on is for me not that important in this moment.

“I know for the boys it is always a little bit that they think ‘oh, it’s a sign’ or whatever. The only signs I recognise are in the games from the players, it’s not about whether you start or whether you play 20 minutes or whether you play 45 in the second half or whatever. I am completely open for all good performances.

“We will see how we line up, but it needs to make sense for the players – we had players who started [pre-season training] on the 5th, 8th and 11th [of July]. The players started in different moments, so we need to have a look at this and speak to the medical department.

“They all will have time to play here in these two games for sure. We will share it a little bit and then we will see how we can do it in Germany because it is a different tournament. The next five games are against big, big opponents.”

On whether he plans to make wholesale changes at half-time – as was done against Tranmere and Wigan – Klopp said: “That’s not 100 per cent the plan to do it here, but maybe we have to. I have to give playing time to the players here.

“We need to be flexible, but to talk about a line-up isn’t possible at the moment.”
