On this day in 1969, Liverpool put 10 goals past Irish side Dundalk at Anfield as future manager Gerard Houllier stood on the Kop for the first time.

Playing in the old European Fairs Cup, Bill Shankly’s side had seven different scorers on the night, with five goals netted in each half of the first leg of the sides' first-round tie.

Left-back Alec Lindsay had a debut to remember as he found the net, Alun Evans, Tommy Smith and Bobby Graham all scored twice, while Ian Callaghan, Chris Lawler and Peter Thompson were also on the mark.

Houllier later revealed he had attended the game with his future Anfield assistant Patrice Bergues as he experienced the Kop for the very first time.

Recalling the night with lfchistory.net, Houllier said: "I suppose going to the game with Patrice that day was a touch of destiny.

“Patrice had come over to spend a few days with me because I was here on my own, and so we decided to and see Liverpool play Dundalk.

“What impressed me first of all was the atmosphere inside the stadium. We were on the Kop, and it was fantastic to see the unconditional support of the fans.

“I was also impressed by the energy which was shown in the game, and the stamina of the players. I think 15 minutes before the end of the match the score was 8-0 and still Liverpool went looking for goals.

“In fact the score at half-time was 5-0. In France, if you are 5-0 up at half-time the game is over in the sense that you don't bother trying to increase your score. It's not like that in England."

This weekend, LFCTV will bring the history of Anfield to life in a brand new and exclusive documentary.

Airing for the first time at 8pm BST on Sunday September 18, 'This Is Anfield: The Documentary' tells the complete story of Liverpool’s iconic home.
