Members of the Liverpool FC Legends squad were in training for their upcoming match on Monday afternoon – and played out a keenly-fought seven-a-side game that ended honours even.

A number of the former Reds who are set to participate in the charity clash with Real Madrid Legends at Anfield on March 25 met up for a preparatory workout at the Academy.

For the short practice match, Steven Gerrard joined forces with the likes of Phil Babb, Alan Kennedy, Ian Rush and David Thompson to take on a group including John Aldridge, Gary McAllister, Jason McAteer and Steve McManaman.

McManaman grabbed the opening goal but that was as good as it got for his team, who were ultimately beaten 4-1 – with Gerrard a scorer before seeing a penalty saved, and Thompson on target twice.

‘Next goal the winner’ came as a late cry in the game but as there were no further additions to the scoresheet, it was agreed a shootout would serve as a conclusion.

Gerrard made no mistake from 12 yards this time, though Rush and Aldridge surprisingly missed consecutively for either team, and McAllister, McManaman and co reclaimed pride with a 5-4 victory.
