NewsWSL season preview: Expanded league, how to watch and new Fantasy game
Liverpool travel to Charlton Athletic as the new 14-team Barclays Women’s Super League season gets under way this weekend.
An expansion of the division to include two more clubs means a total of 26 league games for the Reds across 2026-27.
First up is a trip to The Valley on Sunday (September 6).

Participating teams
Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Everton, London City Lionesses, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United – alongside Liverpool – retained their WSL status last term.
Man City are the defending champions after finishing four points clear of Arsenal in 2025-26.
Leicester City dropped out of the top flight, with Birmingham City, Charlton and Crystal Palace promoted up to the WSL.
The bookmakers list Chelsea as the favourites to be crowned champions; Arsenal and Man City are joint-second favourites.
Liverpool’s fixtures
It will all kick off for Gareth Taylor’s side at 2pm BST in south-east London on Sunday as they face Charlton.
Home meetings with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton – the latter to be played at Anfield – sandwich an away game at Man City to get the season rolling.
City will also be the Reds’ final opponents of the campaign, next May.
The opening weekend
To begin the action, London City host Man Utd on Friday evening.
Chelsea then welcome Villa for a Saturday lunchtime tie, and elsewhere on Sunday there are clashes between Brighton and Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham, Palace and Everton, and Man City and Birmingham.

Supporters can book by game, for the full season or select the Anfield Hat-trick Package – with the visits of Everton, Arsenal and Villa to be held at the stadium.

New faces
Taylor has brought in six additions to his squad over the course of the summer.
England international goalkeeper Khiara Keating and defenders Sara Agrez and Mari Ward will feature in the back line.
Experienced midfielder Natalia Ramos and Japan attacker Mao Itamura were also recruited by the Reds.
And Vivien Endemann is a new member of the forward ranks having, like Agrez, agreed a deal to sign earlier in the year.
How to watch
In the UK, Sky Sports and the BBC will again be televising WSL games live during 2026-27.
Each of the Reds’ first four fixtures are set to be shown by Sky Sports.
Selected matches will also be streamed live on the official Barclays WSL YouTube channel, including Liverpool v Tottenham on September 13.

A new Fantasy game
The league has launched a brand-new fantasy football experience ahead of the new season getting under way.
The game encompasses both the Barclays WSL and WSL2, with prizes on offer to be won throughout the campaign.
