Round-upWorld Cup: Alisson, Fabinho and Van Dijk defeated in penalty shootouts
Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk have been eliminated from the World Cup.
Brazil – for whom Alisson started and Fabinho was an unused substitute – and the Netherlands, captained by Van Dijk, lost in penalty shootouts to Croatia and Argentina respectively in Friday’s quarter-final ties.
Brazil’s game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and 1-1 after 120. Neymar broke the deadlock in extra-time, but Croatia levelled in the 118th minute through a deflected Bruno Petkovic shot and then prevailed 4-2 on spot-kicks.

Later in the day, the Dutch were beaten 4-3 in the shootout after Wout Weghorst’s dramatic late double had made it 2-2 and forced extra-time, following Nahuel Molina’s goal and a penalty from Lionel Messi. Van Dijk took his side’s first spot-kick and saw it saved by Emiliano Martinez.
Friday’s results mean three Liverpool players remain at the World Cup: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Ibrahima Konate, who will come up against each other when England meet France in the last eight on Saturday evening.
