When it comes to favourite goals, Sir Kenny Dalglish goes right back to the start.

The Liverpool FC icon, who is part of the club’s travelling party on tour in Hong Kong currently, racked up 172 strikes during the playing phase of his legendary association with the Reds.

Quite a list to pick a best out of, then.

And when Liverpoolfc.com put that question to Dalglish in Asia this week, the Scot turned the clock to a Tuesday night – August 23, 1977 – in providing his answer.

Newcastle United at home, the forward’s first Anfield appearance for the club, a minute into the second half.

“I think what was quite important is, my first home game was against Newcastle at Anfield and I scored in that,” he said.

“I think if a player comes to a club, it’s always important to get off to a half-decent start. I couldn’t have done any better.

“I mean, Ray Kennedy laid it on a plate for me! But it went in at the Kop end and that was me up and running. Not too fast! But up and running.”
