Liverpool have joined the race for Sporting Lisbon star Joao Mario, according to reports.

The 23-year-old impressed in Portugal this season, scoring six goals in 33 league appearances for Sporting.

His fine form has attracted the attention of United, and Jose Mourinho has been linked with a move to make the midfielder his first signing at Old Trafford.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the Portugal international and have apparently met with his agents.

But now Portuguese outlet A Bola claim Liverpool have joined the race for the midfielder.

The report claims Jurgen Klopp has turned his attention to Mario after failing to land Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze and Udinese’s Piotr Zielinski.

Gotze is apparently keen to stay at the Allianz Arena next season, while Zielinksi is apparently set to remain in Serie A.
