Florian Wirtz recorded an assist for Germany against Ecuador during their final World Cup group stage fixture on Thursday.

The Liverpool No.7 featured for his nation for 73 minutes in their 2-1 defeat at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Germany - who had already qualified for the next phase as Group E winners - opened the scoring in the second minute via Leroy Sane's low strike, with Wirtz providing a clever pass to find his teammate inside the area.

Ecuador, however, equalised quickly to level through Nilson Angulo, before Gonzalo Plata’s match-winning strike in the 77th minute provided the difference.

Germany will now move to the knockout stage and play their last-32 outing on Monday in Boston.
