Wearing the captain’s armband for Liverpool is a responsibility Virgil van Dijk ‘would never, ever take for granted’.

The Dutchman is heading into his fourth season as the Reds’ permanent skipper, having taken up the role following the departure of Jordan Henderson in 2023.

In a new LFC Original film, Captains, Van Dijk discusses the privilege of being captain alongside two other predecessors, Steven Gerrard and Graeme Souness.

“That feeling every time, no matter where we are, to lead out the boys is incredible. I would never, ever take that for granted,” says the No.4.

“The values of the club – obviously you guys know it better than I do probably still – how important that is to have that connection.

“To have that understanding of the city, what the people of Liverpool are all about.

“All those people out there and the fans around the world expect us to perform each and every three or four days regardless.

“And it’s a nice thing, to be fair. I embrace it a lot. I really enjoy the fact of feeling that responsibility.

“You have to make sure everyone understands what we’re going for, everyone understands that when we go through difficult moments – which we go through – we have to stick together.”

Captains will be released in full on All Red Video on Tuesday August 18 for All Red Full and Video members.
