Liverpool v Manchester City: Team news

Liverpool must make at least two changes for their hosting of Manchester City on Sunday, with Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak ruled out.

The forward pair suffered injuries during the international break that have ruled them out of the Premier League fixture at Anfield.

But Jeremy Jacquet, who missed France's win over Belgium at the start of the week, is set to be available.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola told reporters: "Cody has an ankle injury. He has had some before in his career and it's a matter of him dealing with the pain because when you twist your ankle... it was a really bad tackle, I think.

"He is doing things individually but [he is] not ready for Sunday.

"And Alex has a thigh injury. It's a small injury but it's a muscle injury. The same [as Gakpo], whenever he feels ready.

"They both don't look like long term – we will be analysing day to day. But they are not going to arrive on Sunday."

With Isak and Gakpo out, Iraola was asked about his options in the final third of the pitch.

He said: "Even before, we don't have Hugo Ekitike, who is another very good striker that I'm looking forward to having available also.

"We don't have Hugo, we don't have Alex. We will maybe recover Fede Chiesa but he hasn't played any minutes. He is recovering from an injury but he has been doing a good job in the international break, he has been training with the small group we had.

"A full No.9, it's true that we probably only have [Lewis] Koumas right now, but we have some other options. We have some wingers that have played up front in other teams.

"I think we will put an XI with a level enough to compete for that game."

Inside Training: Liverpool squad return ahead of Manchester City match!

Bradley Barcola, five matches into his Liverpool career, is a winger with previous experience of playing in a central attacking role.

"He is a top player for us. I think he can play in any position up front," said Iraola. "He probably has played more as a left winger but has played a little bit as a striker, has played even more as a right winger. I think he can cover the three positions up front."

As well as Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are long-term absentees for the hosts.

In terms of the visitors, Enzo Maresca declared Erling Haaland to be fit for the game.

The striker had been withdrawn, as a precaution, during Norway's final match of the international window last Sunday.

Maresca reported of Haaland's availability: "He's good. He went to Marbella, [had] two, three days off, played golf, recovery.

"Ready for Anfield."

Phil Foden cannot feature on Merseyside, however, as he is currently suspended.

A fitness issue saw Nico O'Reilly withdraw from the England squad midway through the international break.
